The Department of Tamil has a rich legacy, dating back to 1971-1972, when the B.A. Tamil Literature Course was first introduced. The introduction of the Shift System in 2007-2008 led to the commencement of B.A. Tamil Literature Course (Shift II). Furthermore, the academic year, 2017-2018 marked a significant milestone with the inception of M.A. English Literature. The Department is dedicated to harmoniously integrating Tamil Literature with the vibrant cultural heritage of India, thereby fostering a unique blend of academic excellence and cultural enrichment.

With a mission to empower students from rural and underprivileged backgrounds, the Department of Tamil is dedicated to instilling a profound appreciation for the mother tongue, while fostering discipline and academic rigour. Through a range of annual events, including the Tamil Literary Association and Mutthamil Vizha, students are encouraged to showcase their talents in oratory, writing, and artistic pursuits. A plethora of competitions, including essay writing, short story writing, Thirukkural recitation, and quiz programms, are designed to refine students' skills, while debates, skits, dance, music, and painting competitions nurture their creative expression. Prizes and recognition are awarded to outstanding students, motivating them to excel.

Beyond academics, the Department provides training in seminar and symposium presentation, oratorical skills, and job readiness, leveraging technology to prepare students for competitive examinations and future careers.

With a focus on transformative education, the Department aims to make a profound impact on students' lives, shaping them into compassionate, informed, and engaged individuals who are ready to make a positive difference in the world. By doing so, the Department of Tamil not only enriches the academic landscape but also contributes to the cultivation of a brighter, more enlightened future.
