Microbiology is the study of a diverse group of microscopic organisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. The courses focus on the general principles of microbiology and their effect on the living forms and environment.

The Department of Microbiology, Namakkal Kavingar Ramalingam Government Arts College for Women was established with a view to provide knowledge, skill and services in microbiology. Department presently runs two academic programmes B.Sc Microbiology and M.Sc Microbiology. During the academic years 2003 - 2004 Undergraduate (B.Sc., Microbiology) was started as self-finance course. In the academic year 2006 -2007 it was undertaken by Tamil Nadu government and shifted as government approved course. M.Sc., Microbiology was initiated in the academic year 2018-2019 through directorate of collegiate education, Tami Nadu. The Department is one of the pioneer Departments in Government colleges in Namakkal district.

A candidate who has passed higher secondary examination in any one of the biological sciences (Botany/ Zoology/ Biology /Microbiology) (Academic/ Vocational Stream-Agri, Home Science, Poultry) under higher secondary board examination, as per norms set by the Government of Tamil Nadu are permitted to appear and qualify for the B.Sc., Microbiology degree examination of Periyar University after a course of study of three academic years.

Candidate who has passed the B.Sc., degree in any Life sciences (Microbiology / Applied Microbiology / Industrial Microbiology / Botany / Plant Sciences and Plant Biotechnology / Zoology / Animal Science / Applied Animal Science and Animal Biotechnology / Biochemistry / Bioinformatics / Biology / Life Sciences / Home Science / Food Science & Nutrition shall be eligible for admission to M.Sc. Degree Course in Microbiology. Currently, the department offers B. Sc., (Microbiology) with a sanctioned strength of 40 students and M. Sc., (Microbiology) with a sanctioned strength of 20 students. The curriculam for these courses are set based on the industry needs.

The alumni of the department occupy positions of great responsibilities in colleges, hospitals, R&D institutes, pharmaceutical and biotech industries. Department has excellent infrastructure for teaching and research. Department is provided with separate sophisticated laboratories for UG and PG courses with well-established infrastructure facilities. The Department is focused to maximize the usefulness of every academic activity of standardize the education.

tudents of Microbiology can have the ability to receive various government and non-government fellowships and scholarships such as minority (BC, MBC, SC/ST) and merit scholarships from Tamil Nadu Government. Faculty of the department is also consistently publishing research articles, attending seminars, workshops, FDP, submitting research proposals (UGC and TNSCST) and receiving various awards and rewards.
